The Problem
Individual performing artists have few resources available to them for planning and professional development. Consequently, they develop their careers reactively, not proactively. The professional development resources that are made available to them are often short-lived, impersonal, and led by administrators rather than artists.
MISSION
The mission of Artists U is to provide individual performing artists with planning and professional development programs that are comprehensive, local, long-term, and artist-run. Artists U seeks to empower artists to leverage their talents and accomplishments toward individual goals and visions.
Artists U is a nine-month program for 12 performance-based, originating artists. Artists meet as a group once a month to address specific topics with guest speakers and facilitators. Each artist meets one-on-one with a facilitator every other week to do specific planning work. Nominations to the panel are solicited from the greater community, artists and through the Letter of Interest.
Planning Mondays are individual hour-long appointments for artists of any genre to discuss a tactical matter or explore areas of planning with one of the Artist U facilitators. Planning Mondays occur every Monday between January and June 2011. Anyone who identifies themselves as an artist (making art is at the emotional or financial core of your life) and would like to sign up for an appointment can do so here. As this program is free, please do let us know 48 hours in advance if you need to cancel or would like to reschedule.
AU Short Course is a three-session workshop that covers the core competencies and understandings of the larger program. We focus on finances, administrative skills and life/work balance. This program is open to artists in all disciplines, and attendance at all sessions is required.
2010-2011 sessions is 7pm-9pm on May 16, 23, 30. To sign up, please send NAME and CONTACT INFO (phone + email) to Andrew@Headlong.org
