Pittsburgh: Grant Writing for Artists

Simple tools and principles from an artist who writes grants

I didn't sign up to be a grantwriter. I wanted to be a choreographer. I discovered that, to make my work, I needed to find support. So I embarked on a painful learning process of trial and error, making every possible grant writing mistake. Eventually, I secured grants from funders like Creative Capital, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and The Rockefeller Foundation.

I want to share with you everything I've learned. Based on 20 years of grant writing and art making, I will introduce artists to principles for writing simple, clear grants. We will read some short proposals and act as a panel, scoring and discussing them. No bull, no fancy powerpoints, just real-world tools for artists who write (or want to write) grants.

Minneapolis: Me/We, a workshop for artists with organizations, collaborations, and collectives

How do we reconcile our artistic selves with our structures? Performing artists are pressured to "structure" an artistic life into an organization/company/nonprofit. Performing artists also collaborate by nature and form generative (and complex) webs of collective action. How do we parse these overlapping roles? Specifically, what are principles for envisioning a productive, balanced life as an artist and a structure-runner? What tools and tactics have artists used to make it work? How can we move the conversation away from burnout and toward sustainability?

Location TBD
Presented by Springboard for the Arts and the Minnesota Theater Alliance

Minneapolis: all-day workshop for dance artists

Building a Sustainable Life as a Dance Artist
A free one-day workshop for dancers and movement makers

Too many brilliant, mission-driven dance artists are exhausted, broke and overwhelmed.

I am a choreographer. I ran a dance company for 20 years. In this workshop, I will share tools and principles artists have used to thrive. And we will build a conversation, a realistic, un-complainy conversation that sees the challenges but also acknowledges that our skills are more than up to the task. We will do some specific, practical work (planning, writing about our work) and some big picture thinking. And we will look at the specific challenges facing dance artists: the demands of creating and producing the work, funding and touring cycles, and a supposedly embodied life that too often ends up in front of a laptop for eight hours.

MINNEAPOLIS: Building a Sustainable Life as an Artist Talk

For the past ten years, I've been looking at artist lives: what is punishing, how we can thrive, and, most of all, the tools and skills we already have. I will share some big picture principles and specific tools and tactics that artists have used to build sustainable lives.
